The first three digits of the european EAN-13 barcode identify the country in which the manufacturer's identification code was assigned.
Some codes are reserved, others have not been assigned. Some countries have been assigned several codes.
Note that in the United States the equivalent code is UPC-A and in Japan the equivalent code is JAN.
